Stuff that makes me feel better

It’s been a massive couple of months and I’m feeling drained, and a little homesick. Here are some of the things I’m watching, listening to, and reading to lift my spirits.

Looking, a new series starring Jonathan Groff (Glee), Frankie J. Alvarez, and Murray Bartlett (Australian born—he was in The Secret Life of Us, Neighbours, and Home and Away!). I like Emily Naussbaum’s description:

“Looking” takes place in that Emerald City modern San Francisco, where same-sex marriage is legal and older definitions of gay identity—rebel, outsider, artist—have begun to curl with age.

Pure Heroine, by Lorde. This album is fantastic. It’s hard to believe that Lorde (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor) is just 17 (she was 16 when her song ‘Royals’ went #1 here in the US). Here are some of my favorites, among her many smart lyrics:

We live in cities you’ll never see on screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Living in ruins of the palace within my dreams
And you know, we’re on each other’s team

National Geographic Interactive. You’ll need an iPad to experience this at its best, but the National Geographic Interactive is truly amazing. I love the feature on Canada’s Yukon region. Need to be reminded that there is a big, beautiful world out there beyond your desk and laptop? Check this out.

SNL. Probably the greatest single source of joy for me here in the US (excluding Mr S obviously) is Saturday Night Live. I basically spend my Sundays waiting for it be uploaded onto hulu.com.

Planning on asking me to hang out on Sunday? Just know that I’m counting the hours until I can go home and watch SNL. This is my favorite clip from last week’s episode with Jonah Hill.

Sad, but true.
