5 things I’ve realised about writing

We are big fans of numbered lists in our household. Nothing indicates a serious conversation better than outstretched fingers and sequentially numbered arguments.

So today, I’ve decided to give a quick numbered list of the things I’ve realised about writing.

  1. It doesn’t pay well.
  2. To be successful as a freelancer (or self-published author) you need business skills.
  3. You also need to be smart. For example, you have to pitch the right story (with a good angle) to the right person at the right time.
  4. Writing well is hard. Much harder than you might expect.
  5. The good news is that you are not alone. A LOT of people love to write. There are plenty of inspiring and supportive resources out there for writers.

What have you learned about writing? I’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.

  1. Sometimes, you write a cracker of a sentence. You unlock some universal truth, and you express it gorgeously. Self high-five! You carry on writing, and then it dawns on you: your near-perfect little sentence doesn’t fit. It needs to die so the piece can live. This causes me more trauma than I like to admit. If I’ve leaned one thing about writing, it’s that I must stop getting so attached to my own words. I’m sure there’s a metaphor for life in there somewhere too …
